Tuesday: Brownie 1

We started the day with a flag ceremony in the shade of the library.

We headed up to the campsite and did another pottery accomplishment, we did step 5 "Paint and Glaze" by painting glaze on the pinch pots we made yesterday.  They will be fired tomorrow for us.  We found the Connect Key in our Brownie Quest Journey.  We will be working on Taking Action the rest of the week.

We met a girl who started a charity to fundraise for cancer patients.  Her charity is called "Paige's Cupcakes for Cancer." (click on the link to go to her facebook page)

During our Letterboxing time, we did steps 3 & 4 of the badge.  We practiced solving clues and searched for a letterbox.
We found a box!

After lunch, we got to hear two stories by Susan Fowler.  She told us of a lady who is having a 133rd birthday on Thursday, Helen Keller.  She also told us about a lady who was 20 years older than her, Juliette Gordon Lowe.  Helen Keller lost her hearing and sight when she was around 2 years old.  Juliette lost hearing in one ear as a teen due to an ear infection, and most of the hearing in the other ear due to an injury - the rice from her wedding got lodged in her ear.  We had a frozen snack (Thanks Torrey!) and then did raingutter boat races using the sails decorated yesterday.  We then got to visit a station with friends from the Vanderburgh Humane Society.  They brought a rabbit, a rat, a dog and a snake for us to see.  The day ended with a closing flag ceremony.

Remember to bring your object to tie-dye tomorrow!

Some of us got to act out parts in her story

What a stellar day!

Today we had visits from local Story Teller and Lifetime Girl Scout Susan Fowler, the friends at VHS and Miss Paige from Paige's Cupcakes for Cancer.

Cadettes spent the morning with members of the USI STEM math team exploring a variety of facets where math and art overlap, and making their own tessellation.

Junior Group 2 spent the afternoon with the Robotics team... Quotes from the girls as shared:

"This is cool! It's like we are scientist"

"I want to have one of these at home to mess with"

And as shared by one of our CIT robotics Aides "the look of amazement and the click when they press the RUN button and they see the NXT robot do what they had programmed it to do from the computer [then downloaded to their bot] "

So, without further ado, here are snapshots from today.

Another day of getting wet :-) when Susan tells us stories in the heat, expect a little excitement when the squirt bottle comes out.  All in fun and to help stay cool.

Parents may wonder about any unusual pet adoption requests. ;-)

On the same line as the wonderful visit from VHS today, the Brownie 2 unit scouts, came across an injured turtle today.  Coincidently, the unit co-leaders name is Turtle and has several for pets (4 I think at last count) has dealt with a local turtle Rehabilitation and Release group on previous occasions.  With scout Turtle's help, this box turtle is heading off for some R&R.

We hope you enjoy the photos.  They are mere morsels of what your campers have been up to.

Yours in Scouting,
Torrey

Monday: Brownie 1

After a wet start we did accomplish quite a bit today!

We did step 3 from the pottery badge. For our "Make a simple pot", we made a pinch pot.

During letterboxing, we did step 1 & 2 for the badge, we made a letterboxing dictionary and made a stamp.  Many of us got cooties the rest of the day. We will earn a letterboxing badge this week.

We are working on the Journey "Brownie Quest" this week.  We found the Discover Key, by talking about our special qualities, the values of the Girl Scout Law and the special qualities of our families.  We're looking for the Connect Key, we've made a team agreement as a Brownie team, and talked about how we could connect with our families on a healthy living activity.  We will find the Connect Key tomorrow, and then will start looking for the Take Action Key.

We also did some more art on campus in the art building. We cut out sails for sailboats that we are making with juice boxes (and got to drink the juice, of course!) and will race them later this week.

Amidst all of this, we sang a lot of songs and had a lot of fun with new friends. We hope your girls had a great time.
